Travelling south from Arezzo you pass through the rather flat and uninspiring Valdichiana (this is drained swampland, reclaimed along with the Maremma by the Etruscans, and now prime cattle country), flanked by numerous hilltop towns, the finest of which is undoubtedly Cortona.
